![]() In my case all the pending sectors tested as good, so both the pending sector count and the reallocated sector count were zero at the end of formatting. One that fails will be remapped to use a sector from a pool of spare sectors, the Reallocated Sector count will go up by one and the Pending Sector down by one. A pending sector that passes the test is removed from the pending list. That makes the drive writes to and test every sector. I deleted all partitions, created a single new partition and did a full format. After some 'googling' it seems that hard continuous use, particularly with torrents, can push a drive too hard and cause sectors to be falsely mark as 'pending' when they are actually ok (and judging by some of the content on the drive, it had been used with torrents). I inherited a used 1TB usb HDD which had a Pending Sector Count in the low 'hundreds'. Chkdsk /f won't touch the Pending Sector Count. A low level format is the easiest way to do this. The way to force the drive to do this is to zero all the sectors. The drive will test them when they are no longer in use and determine if they are truly bad, or mistakenly identified.
